Vatican made right choice

THE Vatican has made a wise choice in appointing Father Peter Loy Chong Archbishop of Suva, says Pacific Conference of Churches general secretary Reverend Francois Pihaatae.
Speaking after Archbishop Chong's enthronement yesterday, Mr Pihaatae said it was already evident that the Catholic prelate of Suva would encourage multiculturalism and building bridges between communities.
"He speaks the language of God's love and that is a love which knows no boundaries," Mr Pihaatae said.
"It is very encouraging that Archbishop Chong has taken this stand and we congratulate him for that stance as well as his appointment as head of the church.
"The PCC is aware of the Catholic Church's strong history in social justice, working with the poor and the homeless, providing education and looks forward to seeing this strengthened over the years."
Mr Pihaatae said the Vatican's choice of a leader who encouraged tolerance and respect for human dignity showed wisdom and foresight.
"All countries need leaders who build bridges and create unity," he said.
The PCC also congratulated Archbishop emeritus Petero Mataca for the almost four decades of stewardship.
"Archbishop Mataca has led the church and its people through some difficult times," Mr Pihaatae said.
"He has done well and should be recognised for that. We wish him well in his retirement and pray that God will continue to bless him abundantly."
He said it was important that Fiji's churches built strong bonds in the work of caring for all people.
On Saturday Methodist Church president Reverend Tuikilakila Waqairatu attended the ordination of Archbishop Chong.
Also in attendance were Bishop Winston Halapua, head of the Anglican Diocese of Polynesia with the leaders of the Salvation Army and the Congregational Church of Samoa.
